Why the CII New Generation Programme Matters
The insurance industry is full of opportunity - but often, early-career professionals don’t get the access, support, or visibility they need to thrive. The CII New Generation Programme is designed to change that.
Now in its 16th year, the programme offers a unique space for rising professionals to gain exposure, build networks, and drive meaningful change across the sector. With just 50 places available nationally, it’s an opportunity to step outside your day-to-day role and explore what it means to lead in this profession.
We spoke to three alumni of the programme to hear, in their own words, why this initiative stands out - and why you should consider applying.
Building Confidence, Connection and Community
For Ploy Senawong, the programme was a turning point early in her career.
“It’s a game changer for anyone early in their insurance journey. It gives you confidence, industry-wide exposure, and a sense that you belong here.”
What stood out most wasn’t just the learning - it was the community.
“I came away with a network of like-minded people who are passionate about shaping the future of insurance. It pushed me outside my comfort zone and helped me develop skills I use every single day.”
Access and Visibility – Beyond the Day Job
Sam Taylor highlighted the unique access that New Gen offers - especially for those based outside of London.
“Most companies focus on revenue-generating work. This programme gives you space to think differently, to look at what’s working, what isn’t, and how we can do better as an industry.”
He described it as a rare opportunity to shape ideas at scale.
“We collaborated across roles, locations and perspectives to deliver something tangible. The visit to Parliament was a career highlight.”
His advice?
“Don’t just talk about your job, show who you are and what you bring to a team. Passionate people with real experiences create the most impact.”
A Platform for Career Growth
Harry Wallbank echoed the view that the programme isn’t just prestigious, it’s genuinely transformative.
“It’s something only a small percentage of the industry gets access to each year. It stands you in enormous stead for the brightest of careers.”
The connections Harry made through New Gen went beyond the project work.
“I was offered a new role during the programme, and so were most of the group. I don’t think that’s a coincidence. It puts you in rooms you wouldn’t otherwise be in.”
His message to those considering applying is clear.
“If you’re even thinking about it, that means you care, about your future, and about this industry. That’s exactly the kind of person the programme is designed for.”
What You’ll Gain
Participants on the New Generation Programme work in small groups on projects with real impact. From campaign launches to policy research, previous cohorts have tackled everything from inclusive claims processes to the future of digital influence.
Alongside the project work, you’ll benefit from:
Sessions with the FCA and regulators
A visit to Parliament to meet MPs and policymakers
Mentoring from senior professionals
Training in media, leadership, and policy engagement
Lifelong peer connections and visibility in the industry
For many, it’s a career-defining experience.
Application Tips from Alumni
“Be authentic. Show curiosity and a willingness to learn.”
“Focus on what excites you about the industry, and what you’d bring to the group.”
“If you’ve been rejected before, apply again. It took me three tries.”
“Talk about challenges you’ve seen and what you’d like to change.”
“You don’t need a perfect CV, just the right mindset.”
Who Should Apply?
Applicants should be CII or PFS members with around 5–10 years’ experience and at least Dip CII or Cert PFS qualified. The programme is open to professionals in broking, underwriting, claims, the London Market, and — for the first time — financial services.
Applications are especially encouraged from underrepresented groups across the profession.
The closing date for applications is Monday 18 August 2025.
