80 Role Models for 8 Years of iCAN New York Edition – Event Recap
What better way to wrap up iCAN’s 8th anniversary than with a celebration in New York City, spotlighting the multicultural professionals shaping the future of insurance?
We brought together our iCAN New York Community at AXA XL’s stunning Financial District office, complete with a view of the Statue of Liberty, for an unforgettable evening celebrating visibility, community, and lived experience. The occasion marked the launch of our latest Role Models publication, and it was an evening full of reflection, insight, and inspiration.
Honouring 80 Role Models Across the UK and US
This year’s Role Models publication celebrates 80 multicultural professionals from both the UK and US insurance markets—ranging from rising stars to established leaders—who are breaking new ground and redefining leadership across the industry.
Their stories, experiences, and perspectives serve not only to inspire, but also to highlight the power of authenticity, resilience, and inclusive leadership.
Highlights from the Panel
The evening featured a compelling panel discussion with industry leaders who spoke candidly about their journeys, challenges, and the responsibility of representation.
Jhan D. Doughty (Everest) shared her reflections on embracing her immigrant identity and the power of showing up authentically. From navigating spaces where she was the only woman of colour to reframing that experience as a privilege, Jhan reminded us:
“No job is beneath you... and always be working on something no one else knows about.”
Tony Chimera (Westfield Specialty Insurance) opened up about imposter syndrome, vulnerability, and the need to find community at work. His words resonated deeply:
“If you work for someone who suppresses you, you don’t belong there.”
Lee H. Vuu (MRIA - Multicultural (Re)Insurance Association) spoke about the cultural shifts needed to live authentically and the quiet power of visibility. Her advice was clear:
“Use social media, connect, reach out – small moments can change lives.”
“They don’t work for me – I work for them.”
Kevin La Salle (AXA XL) challenged attendees to rethink what truly inspires others in leadership:
“Are you silenced, or are you silent?”
“Be the role model you’re looking to be.”
Each speaker brought something unique—courage, candour, and a clear reminder that representation is about making space, lifting others up, and leading with empathy.
A Celebration of Progress and Purpose
This event was more than a book launch—it was a celebration of how far iCAN has come in eight years, and a commitment to the future we’re building together. One where multicultural talent is not just included but championed.
We’re incredibly grateful to AXA XL for hosting us, and to every speaker and guest who helped make the evening such a meaningful milestone.
As we celebrate this milestone, we invite you to continue the conversation—share the stories, champion your colleagues, and show up authentically. The next eight years of progress will be built on moments like these.
